Today, I am also featuring Monique of Natural and Fabulous. Monique blogs all about natural hair and its impact on culture, as well as personal stories of women who have recently gone natural or have been natural for awhile.

Here is her interview:

What color do you wear the most? Black, black and more black.

What color do you wear the least? Blue and red

What color do you feel sexy in? Orange, yellow, white and black.

What color do you get the most compliments in? Purple. If I wear a purple top I get complimented all day.

Her photos:

Monique wasn’t lying, she does wear a lot of black! A lot of the photos she sent me were of her in black or black and white; so I culled them down a bit.

My eyes are drawn straight to the photos of Monique in yellow and taupe, in a good way. She looks stunning in the golden yellow, holds her own in the soft, butter yellow, and glows in the taupe. Compare those against Monique in light green which fades her out, the black which is just sitting on her, and the light pink which overpowers her. See the difference?

Monique is an Autumn. Although she wears black (and black and white) a lot (which a lot of people tend to do, since it is an accepted ‘safe’ color), I think she should branch out more into different shades of browns to replace the black. She avoids blue and red, both of which are already not flattering for Autumns. She feels sexy in orange and yellow, her most telling interview clue; both are classic Autumn colors. She gets complimented in purple which is very common for Autumns. On the color wheel, purple’s complimentary color is yellow. Autumns have yellow-golden undertones to their skin so they wear purple well. I would just recommend getting more warm purples as opposed to cooler, grape purples.

Today I am featuring La of Liquors, Loans, & Love. La is a phenomenal writer and all-around awesome woman. Here is her interview:

What color do you wear the most? I probably wear black more than anything. Tied closely with red.

What color do you wear the least? Yellow. I look like an extra in a zombie movie in it.

What color do you feel sexy in? Reds tones; candy apple reds and blue based magentas.

What color do you get the most compliments in? Reds. And occasionally greens; mostly emerald green or army green.

La’s answers are extremely telling! Let’s look at her photos:

Notice anything? La wears primarily cool, bright colors. There is only 1 photo of her in a warm color; the brown. The brown is doing nothing for her whereas she is positively sparkly in the cooler colors of light gray, spring green, pink, fuchsia, and purple. La is a Winter.

Today I am featuring Eliss of Integrated Memoirs. Eliss blogs about her life and experiences being in an interracial relationship. Check her out!

What color do you wear the most? I love reds, pinks, and purples. I also like black, but since I’ve relocated to the southwest part of the U.S., I don’t see myself wearing it much. It’s too hot!! If I had to pick one, it would be pink.

What color do you wear the least? Brown

What color do you feel sexy in? Red

What color do you get the most compliments in? Red

Let’s take a look at Eliss’s photos:

Notice a theme? Eliss tends toward mostly cool colors. Here is the only picture of Eliss in a warmer color.

Eliss does not look bad in the taupe, but it definitely is not making her glow like the cooler colors are. Look at the first photo of her in the red. That is a really bright red top but Eliss holds her own in it. You can only do that if your skin tone is cool. See how soft she looks in the pink? How, even with the bad lighting from the bathroom lights, she is wearing the black and red, and not the other way around? See how radiant she looks in white?

The other clues are in her interview responses. She gravitates toward, feels sexy in, and gets complimented in cool colors. The color she wears the least? Brown, a warm color. So Eliss definitely subconsciously wears her season’s colors. Eliss is a Winter.

QQ in Stripes

Just a quick drive-by post to show how to do patterns in your season.

QQ, you may remember, is an Autumn. Here she is in a cream top with brown, orange, and peachy stripes and has accented with gold jewelry. This pattern is classic warm since every color featured is warm. This top would work for Autumns AND Springs since it has a mix of lighter and darker warm colors.

Thanks QQ!

Today I am featuring TaKiyah of Some Sweet Photography. If you need self-portraits done, engagement/bridal, baby shower, newborn, party, family, WHATEVER photos done TaKiyah is your woman.

Before we get all up in her analysis, a note. Sometimes, with some people, if they happen to be wearing the right (or wrong) color, all I need is ONE photo to tell their season. With others, it may take a few photo comparisons to figure it out, but with some people there’s a definite BAM moment.

TaKiyah? BAM.

She’s an Autumn, case closed. *closes piano, leaves*

Ok ok, let’s look at the rest of her photos. But seriously? That mustard color? Do you see the radiance? We have a gotdamned Sun Goddess on our hands. Here are her photos:

Here is her interview:

What color do you wear the most? black…it hides my wobbly bits

What color do you wear the least? red- I think it makes my face redder? I don’t know? Plus my mom had this hang-up when I was growing up about black people wearing red. (red lipstick, eating red watermelon, and drinking red soda)

What color do you feel sexy in? hmmm…I think anything “golden”.

What color do you get the most compliments in? Brown, I think. (I’m actually just thinking about the brown dress I had on yesterday that I got compliments in)

Ok now TaKiyah’s photos and interview are very telling. She feels sexy in anything golden? OH REALLY? *scrolls up* OH OK. *scrolls back down* Aaaannndd she gets compliments in brown. Mm-hmm. Classic Autumn. Most of TaKiyah’s photos are of her in bright, cool colors: blue, fuschia, red, and turquoise. All of them just sit on her, not helping her pay bills, take photos, babysit, nothing. Same with the black. But you start to get a sense of flow when you look at TaKiyah’s photos in the blush/rose-gold, taupe, and of course, mustard yellow. See the difference? TaKiyah is an Autumn.

Today we have another reader submission, the vibrant Wynnie. Let’s take a look at her photos and interview.

Here is her interview:

What color do you wear the most? Why?
I don’t have one particular color that I wear the most, but I do know that my favorite colors are bright colors and any pattern involving a bright color. I went through my closet and I have a lot of greens, blues, pinks, purples and yellows. The few rest are black or very little brown.

What color do you wear the least?
I try to stay away from dull colors like gray, black and brown.

What color do you feel sexy in?
I feel really sexy in red, dark purple and pinks…in that order.

What color do you get the most compliments in?
I wear a lot of dresses in the summertime. It seems that my bright reds and yellows have received a lot of compliments. Although, when I wear black (not very often), I also get good comments.

Looking at Wynnie’s pictures I can definitely see a theme of bright colors and patterns (I love the green printed maxi dress!). Wynnie’s stand-out photos where she is glowing are the photos of her in pure red, green/white floral print, and bright purple. All these colors are vibrant, but most importantly, these colors are cool. The only photos of Wynnie in warmer tones are those of her in the burgundy-ish sweater and the charcoal gray tank top. She does not look bad in either photo, but the colors are not doing anything for her and make her look a bit faded throughout. Based on those key photos I determined that Wynnie is a Winter. I noticed Wynnie has some gold/brown-toned jewelry that she wears in the photos. I would recommend more silvery-toned jewelry if you can, that will really set off your colors and your skin. Also, I would recommend Wynnie avoid cool pastels unless they’re in a pattern with more vibrant colors.

The awesome thing is Wynnie is an example of people who subconsciously lean toward the colors in their seasons without necessarily being aware of their season. She already has a good foundation, wardrobe-wise in her colors so it should be easy to build upon it going forward.

Thanks Wynnie!

Mm-kay. So today we have Ethel. Ethel writes:

Dear Gem,

I really am intrigued by the in depth information you provide regarding our skin tones and how important and valuable it is for us to find and know the colors that flatters us the most. I have attached…photos.

Please help me to determine the BEST colors I should wear in fashion as well as in eye colors and lip colors.

Here are Ethel’s answers to her brief questionnaire:

What color do you wear the most? Why?
Brown–It used to be black. I used to wear black a lot because people say that it goes with everything.
I wear brown now because I think it goes with my season and it’s now my basic color like black used to be.

What color do you wear the least? Why?
I don’t wear white that much because I don’t think I look good in it, especially when I take pictures in white.

What color do you feel sexy in?

What color do you get the most compliments in?

Okay, now let’s take a look at Ethel’s photos.

Ethel, I would say you are definitely an Autumn. In the first two photos, the black/white pattern and the black are just sitting on you, weighing your look down. In the orange and brown, you are glowing. The red looks like a slightly warmer red and the gold jewelry helps set off your skin.

The picture in the middle is interesting. There are several shades between fuschia, magenta, and others in that shade family. On the pinker side, which is what your outfit looks like, is where Winters shine. If the outfit had just a bit more purple in it, it would come off as a warm purple, a good shade for Autumns.

It’s telling that Ethel said she wears brown a lot and feels sexy in orange while having an aversion to black and white. She is already intuitively in-tune with her season which is a good foundation to have. I sure wasn’t before I became aware of my season!

I hope this helps Ethel, and for a more in-depth color analysis/list including eyeshadow, lip colors, etc. go ahead and enter the Giveaway for your chance at a complete list for this autumn!

I received a request from a reader to basically confirm a previous analysis that she is an Autumn. Here is her comment:

Dear Gem

It was a pleasure to read your blog. I wonder if you could verify my season.
I was catergorised by Lora Aleksander as a warm autumn ( I am biracial – father Sudanese m mother Polish ).I have made several pictures in the colours from my swatches and in white, black and burgundy, which are not my colours. I believe that Lora is rigt in her judgement, I just cannot see anything that these colours give to my appearance.
I need an objective opinion.

Best regards

Let’s take a look at the photos she sent in:

Almost immediately, I can confirm her previous analysis. Katarzyna is indeed an Autumn. The black washes her out completely. The coral gives her a sparkling glow, a healthy deep tan appears in her skin. The red is flattering on her as well, as it is not a true, bright, fire-engine red but a more muted red. Katarzyna, I recommend you include some nice golden yellows, medium-to-deep browns, deep burnt oranges, and some muted greens in your wardrobe to really bring out your lovely skin. Thank you for reading and writing to me!
