Ali

I recently completed a Glowing Color Consultation for Ali, a stay-at-home mom in Wisconsin. She has ash blonde hair, and greenish-gray eyes. She wears black, pink, gray, navy, and white the most.
After evaluating her photos, I determined Ali is a Spring. She should gradually shift her most-worn colors to blush/peach, coral, cream, olive, and light yellow. She can use charcoal gray as a replacement to black and can still wear navy in some instances (especially as bottoms).

Below is a sampling of some items I sent for her to shop in the format of a Color Board. She also wanted some hair color recommendations, so I sent her a couple of examples of a rich, golden blonde.

Linda

Today, Glowing Color features Linda.

Linda is a Human Resources Analyst from California, and her favorite thing to do is travel and take pictures.

Linda’s Color Interview:

What color do you wear the most? I wear mostly black and navy

What color do you wear the least? I hardly ever wear pastels

In what color do you feel sexy and/or beautiful? I think I look my best in black and darker pinks

In what color do you receive the most compliments? Recently, someone told me I look good in dark grey. But, I’ve also been told that I look very pale in the same color ūüôā

Linda is a Winter. There was an obvious difference with Linda between the cooler and warmer colors, as the warmer colors washed her out. The colors of Summer showed some promise, but were still ultimately too light. When I saw Linda in the strong blue and green jewel tones of Winter, I saw her face glow. I looked at her first instead of her shirt colors. This is always an easy giveaway with the bolder Winter tones because it is easy to want to look at the colors of the outfit first. If the eye is drawn to your face first, you have a winner.

Mariah

Today, Glowing Color features Mariah. “Mother of 6, Home School Teacher/Interior Design Student/Ex-Dancer/Ex-singer (who still sings on occasion) and Health Instructor.¬† I am a Christian and love Jesus.¬† For fun I jam it up with some muso’s and perform live. I live in Australia.¬† Day to day I teach children and also keep my finger on the pulse for interior design.

Mariah’s Color Interview:

What color(s) do you wear the most?¬†For the last few months, close to a year I have worn neutrals because I don’t know what shades suit me best.¬† Aging makes it all confusing.¬† What do you wear when you are close to 50? I know that coral, deep beige corals, wheat beige, warm animal print and black have become staples.¬†I can slide between cools and warms, but some warms don’t work and some cools don’t work, so really I just don’t know.

What color(s) do you wear the least? White and Blue (never wear them!)

In what color(s) do you feel sexy and/or beautiful?¬†Deep Red and Gold. Black if it’s cut beautifully with some oyster in it and a touch of lace for a hint of cleavage or leg… but just a hint.

In what color(s) do you receive compliments? Champagne.  Coral.  Black.  Brown.  Burgundy.

Mariah is an Autumn. I could identify her almost immediately, with the first photo she sent in of her in a tan sweater (not pictured), and the way it made her eyes and skin sparkle. Mariah has been confused by being typed in other seasons, but I think the problem is she has not ventured far enough into the more vibrant Autumn tones; most of her colors have been on the lighter to pastel side. Although her blog interview mentioned some good colors such as burgundy, gold, and coral, most of her warmer photographs were in lighter colors. I think she will notice a big difference after she goes a bit darker and more vivid with her clothes. She is on the right track though!

Aisha

Today, Glowing Color features Aisha.

About Aisha:¬†‚ÄúI would like to know which season I am as I am getting married next year and I don’t want the colours in the bouquet to wash me out!!¬†I live in Wilmslow, Cheshire in England (near to Manchester) and work as a Marketing, Sales and Events Co-ordinator for a company that organises stag and hen weekends. I used to work in law but I missed using my creative side (I used to love writing when younger and always have ideas for things), so I changed jobs last year and hope to get qualified in marketing after I get married next year. I live with my fiance and we’re busy planning our wedding at the moment ¬†for next year and, like I did when we did up the house, I have loved using my bargain hunting and obsessive research skills to get the best deals! I like keeping fit and you can’t keep me off the dance floor when I am out!‚ÄĚ

I am very excited to work with Aisha and help her choose colors for her wedding. I am splitting Aisha’s analysis into two separate posts-this one with the standard color analysis, and the next one will feature wedding color ideas!

Aisha’s Color Interview:

What color(s) do you wear the most?

Blue in all kinds of shades (though I prefer brighter or aqua colours and don’t really like pastels as I don’t think they really reflect me as a person).¬†Black as it goes with everything.¬†I do have a few coral and purple items too.

What color(s) do you wear the least?

Brown or beige – in fact, I don’t think I have one brown item in my wardrobe! I’m not a big neutral fan (apart from black)- I like things bright and beautiful!¬†

In what color(s) do you feel sexy and/or beautiful?

It depends on the fit – I gravitate towards brighter colours and feel sexier in those but I struggle to get things to fit me as I have a large bust and so I often have to settle for clothes that don’t fit or colours that don’t suit – it’s rare to find both.¬†

In what color(s) do you receive compliments?

Blues, greens and purples.

Aisha is a Summer. She looks best in the softer cool colors vs the more bold cool colors, but compared to warm colors it is no contest. The warmer colors wash her out and age her face. She looks ethereal in the soft blues and pinks of Summer, and can carry off some of the deeper colors as well. Keep in mind her natural hair color is a darker blonde than shown here, and some different tones of blonde could really enhance her natural glow. Also, notice how her interview gave away her natural instinct for her best colors!

Maritza

Today, Glowing Color features Maritza.

About Maritza: “I am ¬†from (and live in) in Mexico City.¬†I am working as an executive administrator in a small company.¬†I am just married.¬†I like cooking, love the confectionery, cupcakes, cakes .”

Maritza’s Color Interview:

What color(s) do you wear the most? Black, pink, medium gray, dark blue.

What color(s) do you wear the least? Red, orange, brown, white, beige, coral, camel. Icy colors.

In what color(s) do you feel sexy and/or beautiful? Sexy: Hot pink or black. Beautiful: All shades of pink, true green.

In what color(s) do you receive compliments? Royal blue, bright pink, fuchsia, dark rose, true green, teal.

Maritza is a Winter. The fuchsia and the royal blue jumped out right away. Her face looks so clear and bright in these colors. Maritza should definitely stay close to the bolder, more vibrant Winter colors and avoid the light and pastel cool colors. Also, go back and read her Color Interview. She was very in tune with her season unconsciously.

Laura

Today, Glowing Color features Laura.

I’m Laura from Dublin in Ireland. Mother to a gorgeous boy and work full time within fashion retail. I love clothes and I’m usually drawn to bright colours and bold patterns although been trying to stick to block colour of late. I start to doubt my choices as my sisters are both natural blondes and look great in soft & muted shades and sometimes I feel like a clown next to them, so thought now is as good a time as any to finally get a second opinion on what season I am and to sort out my wardrobes. I am kickstarting the year with a new healthy lifestyle plan and would love the confidence in knowing I am wearing the right colours that suit me when I lose the final phase of baby weight . Perhaps not the need to wear as much makeup outside of work to colour my face??? If that makes sense.

Laura’s Color Interview:

What color(s) do you wear the most? not really one colour my closet is like a rainbow, but greens and nude-blush shade.

What color(s) do you wear the least? brown, black close to my face, orange, purple.

In what color(s) do you feel sexy and/or beautiful? navy, nude, orange red.

In what color(s) do you receive compliments? green or navy

Before we look at Laura’s photos, here is a shot of her with a hair color closer to her natural color:

Laura is a Winter. Her strong features and lovely eyes pop in the bold, cooler jewel colors of winter compared to being a bit washed out in the warmer colors. Her coloring is also too deep for Summer, hence her feeling not quite right in pastels. I think once her hair lightens a bit, and she sticks to her Winter colors, she will continue to stun.

Kit

Today, Glowing Color features Kit. Kit writes,

I just found your blog this morning and I am totally addicted already.¬† I have been on a quest for over a year hoping to identify my color.¬† I have “tried on” every season and still feel lost.¬† I’m getting older (will be 60 next month!) and I just can no longer see myself or identify what I look good in.¬† I need help!

I would be most interested in learning from you the services you offer and their rates.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Your new reader and fan,
Kit
About Kit: “I live in Los Angeles and have been married for over 20 years.¬† I love to draw and paint, read cookbooks and healthy living blogs.¬† I am mostly vegetarian but do enjoy occasional seafood and chicken.¬† My husband retires in less than three years and we will be moving from Los Angeles to a much smaller market.¬† We are both very excited about that and right now feel a little like we are living in limbo because we are ready for the next chapter in our lives but it isn’t quite time.”

Kit’s Color Interview:

What color(s) do you wear the most? My default colors are blue, gray, and white.

What color(s) do you wear the least? Orange.

In what color(s) do you feel sexy and/or beautiful? Navy or white.

In what color(s) do you receive compliments? Blue.

Keep in mind Kit’s natural hair color is a medium-dark brown. Kit in cooler colors:

Kit is a Winter. Kit has been favoring cooler colors in her wardrobe, particularly blue. She instinctively gravitated toward the colors in her season! She wrote about her hair color feeling off, which makes sense because it is a warm brown with golden highlights. She definitely needs to go cooler with her hair, which will also set off her gorgeous eyes.

Janet

Today, Glowing Color features Janet. Janet writes,

Hello Gem, I think I might be a soft winter, though I am not typical, as is your analysis of Kaetlin.  I have dark blonde changed to medium cool brown hair (and now soft salt and pepper grey) and strong blue eyes/fair skin.   I recently have been analyzed as Light Summer and Cool Summer by top E Color Analysts (by their ratings on Google).   But I feel blah in these colors (actually depressed in Light Summer) and I want to feel radiant.  Could you help me?  Best, Janet

More about Janet:

My business websites are www.permanentmakeupbyjanet.com and Facebook.com/LilyAesthetics.  I am from California and Minnesota and I now have been living in Tucson, Arizona for 30 years.  I am a retired nurse-midwife and now am a permanent makeup artist.  I love color and pride myself on being able to help women look and feel more beautiful with permanent makeup and skincare.  I like to walk with my Pomeranians and swim in my pool.  I love the Arizona desert!

Let’s go to her Color Interview:

What color(s) do you wear the most? Black.

What color(s) do you wear the least? Orange.

In what color(s) do you feel sexy and/or beautiful? Black.

In what color(s) do you receive compliments? Hot pink.

Let’s look at Janet in cooler colors first.

Now, let’s look at Janet in warmer colors.

champagneyellow

coralburgundy

As you are looking at these, keep in mind that she has added golden highlights and her natural hair color is shown in the underside of her hair. Janet is a Winter. Janet was correct in her assessment in her original e-mail to me that she is a Soft Winter. Soft Winter does NOT equal Summer, which explains why she feels depressed in Summer colors. Soft Winter just means she can wear SOME lighter, softer colors but she truly glows in the bold Winter colors. For example, the teal she’s wearing is soft. The light blue she’s wearing is too light for her. Soft Winter equals soft, not pastels necessarily.¬†I go into further detail in her Color Shopping List.

Golden Globes 2013

The Golden Globes aired this past weekend, so you know what that means–time for another Color Right and Wrong! For my post on the 2012 Golden Globes, go here.¬†Let’s jump right in!

Alyssa Milano is an Autumn and looks gorgeous in this citron/saffron-hued gown. Amanda Seyfried is a Spring and looks pretty in her blush/ivory combo. Amy Adams is a Spring and looks fantastic in her pale-nued mermaid gown. Anne Hathaway is a Winter and looks stunning in white. Claire Danes is a Spring and is gorgeous in red. Eva Longoria is a Winter and stuns in black. Jennifer Lawrence is a Spring (her natural hair color is blonde) and looks fabulous in this coral-red gown. Jessica Alba is an Autumn and looks beautiful in her shimmery peachy-coral gown. Katharine Mcphee is a Winter and hits all the right notes in black. Olivia Munn is a Winter and is on the mark in her dress. Sally Field is an Autumn and looks regal in her navy gown. Salma Hayek is a Winter and gets it right in black. Zooey Deschanel is a Winter and this red looks great on her.

Connie Britton is an Autumn (her natural hair color is brown) and though this metallic gown reads warm, it is a bit too light for her. A deeper gold would have looked awesome.¬†Halle Berry is an¬†Autumn and like Connie, is ¬†wearing a gown that reads warm but is too light.¬†Isla Fisher is an¬†Autumn and again we see an example of warm tone but too light (this is an absolutely gorgeous gown though). Jennifer Lopez is an¬†Autumn and while the nude works, the white read of the lacy design distracts.¬†Kaley Cuoco is a¬†Spring. Her gown is the correct color for her season, but her makeup is way too dark.¬†Lea Michele is a¬†Winter.¬†White works for some Winters but it’s hard to tell here since she overdid the tanning.¬†Lena Dunham is a¬†Soft Autumn meaning brown is in the ballpark, but she needs a brighter brown.¬†Rosario Dawson is a¬†Winter and while her mint gown is cool, it is way too light for her.¬†Taylor Swift is a¬†Spring and this chocolate gown is too dark for her.

Debra Messing is an Autumn (her natural hair color is brown), and black does nothing for her. Hayden Panattiere is a Spring. This pink gown reads too cool for her. Jessica Chastain is an¬†Autumn and this seafoam gown is ALL WRONG. Jodie Foster is a¬†Spring and this deep, icy blue is a miss in color for her.¬†Julianne Hough¬†is a¬†Summer so the gold accents of her gown are wrong for her. Julianne Moore is an Autumn. Black=blah.¬†Kelly Osbourne¬†is a¬†Spring¬†(her natural hair color is blonde) so this look is too cool for her (I absolutely love her entire look by the way, it just isn’t making her glow).¬†Kerry Washington is a¬†Winter and looks washed out in this sheer nude.¬†Kristen Bell is a¬†Spring, so this silver is off.¬†Kristen Wiig¬†is an¬†Autumn and looks sickly in her black gown.¬†Lucy Liu is an¬†Autumn, so this secret garden is wrong.¬†Marion Cotillard is a¬†Winter and the orange dress was too warm for her (this photo makes it look more red, but it’s orange).¬†Nene Leakes is an¬†Autumn;¬†this black and white frock does nothing for her.¬†Nicole Richie is a¬†Spring; this pale blue is simply wrong.

Carolyn

Today, Glowing Color features Carolyn from northern California. Carolyn writes,

Greetings color lady,

I am 46 and finally at the point where I am able to pay attention to myself…I have no talent when it involves colors…Here is my problem. I am not photogenic at all and I do not know why. In the photos I really tried to put on makeup correctly. People say I look washed out in photos.

Carolyn’s Q&A:

What color do you wear the most? Seafoam green, light lilac, grey and orange

What color do you wear the least? White

In what color do you feel sexy? I never feel sexy however, I feel most like a girl in seafoam green or maroon.

In what color do you receive the most compliments? Orange/green

Let’s take a look at Carolyn’s photos:

Camera

Camera

Camera

Camera

I can immediately see that Carolyn looks washed out in the first 3 photos where she is wearing cool colors. The last 2 are warm, and her face and eyes come alive a bit more.

Carolyn is an Autumn. She is right to stay away from white, and I would add black to that list. For the colors she wears the most, she should definitely keep the orange, but steer away from seafoam and lilac when worn close to her face (pastels are usually the kiss of death for Autumns), and go deeper in tone with any gray she wears. I have included more detailed color recommendations in her Color Shopping List.
